FA3 Web Update of Shoko Kanazawa

An acclaimed calligrapher from Japan, Shoko was born with Down Syndrome. When her mother, a calligraphy teacher noticed that her daughter had an affinity for calligraphy, she began teaching her at the age of five in order to provide her with a skill to learn in order to support herself in future.

Northwest Film Forum

FA3, the Japan Foundation, and Filmination Co. Ltd. co-sponsored the Seattle premiere of a Japanese film, Perfect
Revolution
at the Northwest Film Forum in February, 2020. 

The film was based on the true story of activist Kumasino (Kuma) Yoshihiko, a disabled man afflicted with cerebral palsy since childhood.  Over time, Kuma learns about love and finds fulfillment in an unexpected encounter. 




October 2019

Crossroad Community Center, Belleuve

An Indian dance program, The Cosmic Dance of Nataraja (King of Dancers), was held at Bellevue’s Crossroads Community Center in October, 2019. 

Performances by four local Indian classical dance schools performed in beautiful costumes to an enthusiastic  standing-room-only audience.  Students and teachers presented dance forms from various parts of India: Bharata Natyam and Mohiniyattam from the south, Odissi from the east and Kathak from the north.

Alicia Carlos Gardens

In August, 2019, an invitation-only event for FA3 members and their guests took place at the home and gardens of Alicia Carlos, former President of the Asian Art Council of the Seattle Art Museum and a member of FA3.

 
A world traveler and art collector, the hostess displayed and talked about her unique set of Ming Dynasty Porcelain Plates, recovered in 1997 from the Busuanga Shipwreck in Philippine waters.  Guests gathered for an afternoon of social
engagement, refreshments and the opportunity to meet one another.




August 2019

Skyline Retirement Center

The Silk Road of Uzbekistan, was held at the Skyline Retirement Center in August, 2019. 

The program brought together world traveler and photographer Barry Broman, who talked about three key cities on the famed road (Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva) and Dr. David Paly, an avid collector of woven fabrics from across the globe and Central Asia, who shared and discussed samples from his treasure trove of antique Uzbek textiles for a special  “show and tell” event.

Lake City Library

Shiang-Yu deciphered hidden meaning in Chinese words.JPG
 

In April, 2019, a two-part FA3 program , at the Lake City Library, was provide participants.  Shiang-Yu Lee presented
The Da Vinci Code, a detailed exploration into the mysteries of the hidden meaning in Chinese language which delved into the structure and compositions of a number of Chinese words, moving beyond their obvious meanings to uncover their deeper implications. 

Contemporary artist, Dr. Agnes Lee, exhibited her current paintings, discussing her focus on the meanings and feeling in Chinese essays and poems to transform and express them in her works of art.

Phinney Center, Seattle

Visual Art Forms of India, presented by FA3 in October, 2018 at the Phinney Center, featured presenters Yamini Gourishankar, Deepti Agrawal Mittal and Amrutha Jayachandran who  exhibited paintings from major parts of the vast country of India:

Thanjavur art from the south,

Madhubani works from the north, and

Kalighat paintings from the east.

Skagit Valley

An exclusive invitation to the Friends of Asian Art Association, FA3 members and their guests toured the newly established Honeychurch “Barn/Gallery” in the beautiful Skagit Valley in May, 2018.  Owners John and Laurie Fairman highlighted a number of the huge inventory of Asian antiques, crafts, textiles, ceramics, prints, paintings, jewelry and furniture. 

They shared the histories and stories connected to the selected items.  The excursion to see the “best of what the world offers” in fine Asian antique and contemporary art was well worth the journey north!

St. Marks Cathedral, Seattle

FA3’s Second Annual Asian and Global Treasures Sale was held at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle in April 2018. 

Open to the public, vendors welcomed attendees in search of special “finds” to visit their tables which were filled with a wide range of items, from small to large, inexpensive to high-end prices, from unique to extraordinary pieces.

Bonhams, a privately owned international auction house since 1793, sent its representative Daniel Herskee to speak on Porcelain Production in China’s Late Qing Era


The FA3 program, held at the Seattle Tennis Club, in February 2018, included Herskee’s expertise in examining and appraising objects brought by program attendees.  His complimentary appraisals were a highlight of the program!
